About this production
The show
Kate Hamill's sharp, modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. The same village, the same misread letters, the same impossible matchmaker. Faster than the novel, funnier than the films, kinder than Emma deserves.
Adapted by Kate Hamill from the novel by Jane Austen. Presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
From the Director
A note for opening night.
Emma is a play about the limits of certainty. Our heroine is brilliant, well-meaning, and almost always wrong. Hamill's adaptation keeps Austen's sharpness and lets the company find what's still funny about the smallest English village, in autumn, in any century.
